Acute kidney injury (AKI) is strongly associated with an increased risk of unplanned hospital readmissions—especially for acute pulmonary edema, according to a study in BMC Nephrology. The researchers analyzed Scottish population-based data on 16,453 patients who were hospitalized and survived to discharge in 2003. Of these, 2623 patients had AKI, based on KDIGO criteria. AKI and other candidate predictors were analyzed as risk factors for unplanned readmission or death within 90 days.
